The Town of Lexington commissioned Tecton Architects and H2M Architects + Engineers to complete a public safety master plan, with recommendations resulting in the construction of a new fire headquarters, new police headquarters and creation of a temporary swing space for each project. The new 26,000 SF fire headquarters is a highly efficient building, meeting LEED Gold equivalence. The station operates a full electric and solar thermal system, including the first radiant apparatus floor in North America, and no fossil fuels are burned on-site, with the exception of a back-up hot water heater and kitchen range. Roof-top photovoltaics off-set the building's electrical use and are hidden from street level, in keeping with historic district considerations. Responder safety and air quality were also primary considerations during design, with 100% outside air units, MERV 13 filters, optimized carbon dioxide monitoring and dilution.
