Meeting the Needs of a Growing, Diverse Community

Peabody Police Headquarters

Peabody, Massachusetts

Tecton is currently designing the Peabody Police Headquarters with the goal of creating a contemporary facility meets the needs of a growing and diverse community and police force. Working in collaboration with the Owner’s Project Manager, Construction Monitoring Services, Tecton completed a space needs assessment and initial conceptual design options, designed to translate the vision of the police department into programmatic spaces. Our work included an evaluation of the existing headquarters, interviews with the department, a review of current space functions, public safety facility design trends, staff demographic flexibility, provisions for community relations and a review of appropriate security measures. We also reviewed current and projected department staffing, potential area development, calls for service, arrest rates, etc. to right-size the program for the future. This exercise resulted in a proposed space program of approximately 52,000 SF, split between mission-critical operations, training, building support, administrative and public spaces. The new building is set to be constructed in a centralized location next to the existing police facility and close to the Higgins Middle School. This creates the opportunity for a “campus” feel and helps ensure rapid response for the City’s Police Department, Fire Department administration and emergency management team. Given the proposed site, the design includes a potential two to three-story building, with a Firearms Range on site, and surface parking for approximately 190 vehicles. The complex will be powered entirely by electricity, with a backup generator that runs on diesel, with rooftop and parking canopy solar panels to help achieve a low Energy Use Intensity.
